Clutch Pedal Failure

Post by scubachris »

Hey fellas,

Driving my car home from a long night of working and my clutch went to the floor. I thought I popped another cable but it turns out the clutch pedal forks that hold the cable on sheared. The clutch cable was still attached to the forks but the forks weren't attached to the pedal. Before I order the parts to replace it, why would it do that other than metal fatigue? I want to make sure that I fix the problem and not just swap out parts.

Thanks
So Cal Mark

excessive required pressure from a binding cable, bad pressure plate etc will cause the forks to crack, pulling the cable at an angle. It shortens the life of the cable once the forks have bent. Some replacement pedals have a reinforcement welded to the bottom of the forks to strengthen them.

Mark,
How do I tell if this is happening? I have been having transmission issues since I bought the car and would rather sink money into other things than just replacing the same parts over and over.

how was the pedal effort prior to the pedal failure? Did your old cables break right at the top? Have you inspected the firewall for cracks around the cable entry?

1) Same as always. I didn't notice it being any harder than usual.

2) My old cables always broke up top. Ever single one of them. The cable that I put in has lasted the longest (it is still good) since I have grounded the transmission.

3) No cracks around the firewall.
