're torque headboard 82 spider

Post by That »

I have very minor coolant leak on 82 spider 124.looks like might be coming from head gasket. Is there any easy way(haha) to access headboard to check torque values/setting? Just thought one might have worked loose.OP replaced head gasket just before I took ownership of vehicle. Of course,he didn't have head checked for warping, cracks, etc and used old headboard.
Any suggestions appreciated. The leak is minor. I can drive 100 miles and coolant level still ok. But block on left side front stays wet and green!

Should be head bolts, not headboard. Sorry

As I recall, there are a couple of manifold studs that screw all the way into the coolant passages in the head. it could be leaking around one of those. When I rebuilt my engine, I put them all back in with Permatex old school non-hardening form a gasket. I bet someone here knows exactly which ones are which. Or it may be in the manual. You can re-torque the head bolts easily, as they are all accessible from the top of the engine, but if the coolant is leaking through there, re-torquing probably won't help.

two of the studs go into the oil galley. If coolant is leaking between the head and block you could have several different issues. The coolant passages in the head may be eroded, the head might be warped, the head bolts and/or threads may not have been cleaned resulting in inaccurate torque, the deck and head might not have been cleaned properly, the head gasket might have been damaged during installation. It takes a fair amount of attention to detail to do the repair properly

Thanks to both you guys. I took advice from search function and 're torque heads to 61 ft lbs. Gotta try simplest solution first. If problem persists I will dig deeper. Again, my thanks. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
