Isn't the assembly order 1 4 2 5 3?

I think you're right. I copied this from a very old post, and may have gotten it wrong. Anyone else care to weigh in?

I rebuilt my extension and it still turns. I actually see it as an advantage as when you shift, your hand rotates a little. This means it slips on the knob if the nob is solid creating wear. if the knob rotates with your hand, no additional wear. you can always square it up for looks when you park.

I was so happy to get rid of my stock chrome extension. The rotating drives me crazy! Yet another example of personal preference - to each his own!azruss wrote:I rebuilt my extension and it still turns. I actually see it as an advantage as when you shift, your hand rotates a little. Agreed!KevAndAndi wrote:My own humble opinion is that the chrome shifter assembly is a ridiculously and unnecessarily complicated contraption. It is a real PITA to remove if you don't know the trick. And the spinning is, for me, completely unacceptable. .
I had trouble with the chrome shifter lever from wobbling/popping off even after replacing with all new parts. There is a little plastic crown looking piece at the base that would not hold it.
So I pulled the chrome piece off and packed the inside of it full of clear RTV! It still spins a bit at the base from normal shifting but is much tighter and fixed the problem.
I can still remove the transmission if I need to. Unlike the directions in the shop manual, the last couple of transmission swaps I just removed the cover around the shifter, and unbolted the shifter box directly from the transmission from inside the car. That way you don't have to drop the shifter from underneath. It also gives you 6" of extra clearance to pull the transmission away from the engine.
The only thing is the chrome shifter is now fused to the shift lever!
