I purchased a speedo drive seal because I thought mine was missing. I expected to see an obvious seal when I removed the knurled nut. I didn't.
It's a little difficult to see inside, but using a mirror now I think I do see something black deeper inside the mechanism. Is that it? If so, does anyone have tips on removing and replacing it? Does it require some sort of pick to pull it out?
If that's not it, and the seal should be obviously present when the knurled nut is removed, then I am missing the seal. In that case, my question would be: which is the proper orientation when putting in the new one (as its ends are different in shape)?

The ones I've seen were pretty close to the end. My guess is that yours got pushed fartrher in.
I used a right angle pick to make a hole and then pull the old one out. It goes in like most seals, ie. the close end out, open end toward the inside.
