Transmission Rebuild Cost

Post by davery »

I have been without my 4th gear for several years and have saved a little money for a rebuild. I do not have the tools or space to do this myself and wanted to get an idea on price of a rebuild. What kind of labor price am I looking at for removal and installation? What about labor on the rebuild? I know the parts costs will be dependant once the tran is inspected. I've talked with a couple of local shops that are interested, but need to call back to get an estimate. Just wanted an idea of what to expect.

And worth every penny.

I had mine professionally rebuilt a year ago and now I'm so glad I spent the money to do it properly. It is so nice to drive now!

I was quoted minimum $3000CDN to find second gear on an otherwise beautiful 1984.

I went to 3 transmission shops, one specifically who has worked on Fiats/Pininfarinas, and they all told me to walk, as it would probably be closer to $5000.

I had mine done, parts and labour for $1,500 by a very reputable shop in Victoria. I did removal and reinstall and they told me which parts to buy after they had disassembled it, then they did the rebuild. I visited regularly to inspect and I was extremely happy with results.
The clutch and pressure plate though was a different story. Because its a Volumex I had to order it from Germany. When it showed up the box was empty! Somebody stole it. Fortunately the vendor replaced it for free provided I paid for the new shipping cost.

If you can get to the Columbus, Ohio Area, Jon is very reasonable on his labor...and uses suppliers that frequent this site, so you get good parts.

I've emailed Jon a few times and he is very helpful. I live about 100 miles away from Columbus and will probably go with him. I took the car to a couple of places in the town I live in (wanting to buy local if I can) to get an estimate. I'm very hesitant about having someone work at it that has probably never seen a Fiat before, but wanted to at least get an estimate.

I rebuilt mine for like $500. Synchro, springs and all bearings.

i stopped by the two shops in town that were interested today. One decided they didn't want to mess with it and the other said they would "try it", but they had never worked on a Fiat Spider before. I would like to buy local, but this makes me pretty queasy. I mean they have a good reputation, but it still worries me.

I think you've answered your question. Take or ship your transmission to Jon. Don't overthink it; if you were in Iceland or somewhere, it would be a challenge. 100 miles? No-brainer.

I don't have the time or space to do it myself. I have been talking with Jon off and on for several weeks. I would just feel more comfortable with someone who is familiar with these cars. Hopefully, he can rebuild it sometime this winter.

are there any vendors on this site that will do a transmission rebuild, or will send a rebuilt one for a core transmission?

I was wondering if it is even worth to have it rebuilt. I planned on the day mine goes bad to just send it to AutoRicambi or Vick Auto as a core and get a new Polish Fiat one or the Lada one. Get a new transmission, plus better 5th gear ratio with either or those options, versus messing with the old one and rolling the dice with how it comes out (and how long it takes  ). I guess if I cared about keeping everything original maybe a rebuild is worth the cash, but it is way too late for that! Just seems like for under $2000 for a new transmission is going to be cheaper than what a rebuild will cost, and better end result.

Or you can get a rebuilt one from AR for $1290 but I figure if I'm going through the effort, 100% new for $300 more is money well spent, plus for the longer 5th gear. I do a lot of highway driving and it'd be nice to drop 10% RPMs in 5th.

Are there bad reviews of the Polish Fiat and Lada new transmissions?
