Snapped another clutch cable

Post by wubie317 »

For the 2nd time in 8 months, I'm replacing my clutch cable. Again, the knob end at the clutch pedal has popped off, leaving the pedal free to snuggle with the floor board. I have read on these boards that there is a possible link between this problem and a ground issue. Could that affect the knurl end, or is this usually more of a cable snapping issue?

Either way, where do I look to see if the ground is a problem? Pictures would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm more a visual learner.

Thanks!

take a piece of thick wire and attach negative on the battery directly to one of the nuts on engine, front of exaust manifold will do

other than that, you probably have a problem with sh** quality replacement parts

When you say knob end popped off the clutch fork. Do you mean the cable still has the knob on it and it popped of the clutch fork or do you mean the barrel at the end of the cable has physically come off the cable (frayed/broken cable). I've seen the fork that holds the cable bend a little allowing the cable to come off and required fork seat to be repaired. More likely the cable snapped just before or at the barrel end. again, this could be the result of the barrel not pivoting to keep the angle somewhat the same when you depress the pedal. Imagine the barrel does not move making the cable bend at the attachment point every time you depress the clutch the cable bends or rubs. The barrel should move or swivel in its seat. I use a little bit of white lithium grease to ensure the barrel pivots/swivels in its seat.

It could also be a bad cable. Clutch cable snapped about four years ago forcing me to use a set of pliers pinching the cable acting as a hand clutch. After that fun drive I purchased two new cables. Installed one and used a little grease, inspect the end of the cable once a year and carry a spare clutch cable in the trunk.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

I doubt it's a "bad cable". Bent clutch pedal forks are the most common cause of cables failing at the top end. The other common failure at that point is that the cable wasn't installed correctly. It's easy to get the cable into the pedal at the collar on the cable rather than the ball

Bruised and scratched hands, yet still can't get the cable to seat in the clutch pedal. What am I doing wrong? I know it was a pain last time I did it, but now I can't get anywhere close to locked in. Is there something I can remove to make this easier?

Not sure about attaching it to the pedal (im sure somebody will chime in on it) but if you feel you cant do it just remove it from the clutch fork at the transmission to give you slack. Remember about how far the adjuster nut sat away from the end of the cable threads to get a basic idea of where to reinstall it at and remove the adjustor nut i advice caution because when i removed mine one time the cluth fork became disengaged from my realese bearing and pivot and i had to wiggle that thing for a half hour to get it to seat right. Once you put it back together be sure you have about 1 inch of freeplay at the pedal.

Good Luck

There is a slot on top of the pedal that the half-moon piece of the cable slides into. If the half moon piece is wider than the slot on top of the pedal then you will never get it in there. May have to grind a little off the sides of the half moon piece.
