82 fiat spider 2000 engine cooling fan

Post by That »

Does the cooling fan operate from a relay? If so, which of the 4 relays is it? My fan works if I ground the wire from fan, but not automatically.i suspect relay could be bad but don't know which one . They all look the same to my tired old eyes. Thanks much to all.

There are 4 relays in a row. One most forward toward radiator is larger. The next three are all the same. Thanks again

Not sure about relays but if you connect your wires going to the radiator fan switch and you have fan but its not on by 210 220ish you either have air in your system or a bad radiator thermostat switch.

Thanks, Rambo . I have bled and re bled system, I have a T connection in heater hose si filled it there slowly several times, removed brass plug in forward water outlet and filled hoses and upper tank there. I'll park on a incline tomorrow and try again. Have already replaced thermo switch in radiator plus new 13 ln Stant cap. Will post more later.

Meant 13 lb radiator cap

What I've found to be the easiet and quickest way to bleed the system is to keep the car on the ground, fill the radiator, then fill the bleed T. Sqeeze the hoses to get air bubbles out then top it off again. Cap it all off then start the car and rev the motor up to 3500-4000 back down to idle then back up to 3500. These rev cycles will use the water pump to force the coolant theough the system.Do this until the temp reaches 220. If you dont have fan let the engine cool, top the water off and do it again. Make sure you connect the two wires going to the thermoswitch to be sure the fan is correct electrically. Also if you have a 190 thermostat you should be able to feel the lower radiator hose going to the T stat should be very hot at 190.

Good Luck.

only the early cars had fan relays, FI car fans are powered directly from the fuse box

Thanks, Mark. Wonder which one of those antique fuses controls it? 16 amp, I'm sure. Narrows it down a little.

But, the fan is getting power because it runs if I ground the black wire coming from fan. I'll work on bleeding system again.

there is no relay on the later cars, the switch is on the bottom of the radiator. Download Brads wiring diagrams to understand the circuit.http://www.artigue.com/fiatcontent/Wiring_1980_1982.pdf
Unplug the switch and short the wires (fan should come on)
Also ensure the top of the radiator temp is the same as the bottom when running. If the bottom is considerably cooler then the top the you have air in the system. if the the bottom is the same temp as the top you have a faulty switch.
Keep an eye on the temp gauge while doing this process, you don't want to cook the motor.

The fuse is a 16A and the horn is usually on the same circuit, usually a quick test is if the horn works the fuse is okay.
