Help please! No oil pressure!

Post by That »

Changed oil and filter in my 82 fiat 124, now no oil pressure! Started and stopped it several times. .still red light won't go out. Before changing oil, I had a problem with red light coming on at low idle. Kinda flickering. My plan was to change oil and filter then warm up engine and increase idle speed a little. Been idling around 5-600 and just hadn't got around to increasing it. I remember reading about this problem and heard if you blow low pressure air into dipstick hole, it might help. Tried it a couple times and no help. I suspected oil pickup broke off but called BIL who sold me car and he denied this. Had pan off changing head gasket and said pickup ok. He said he had a problem similar to mine but forgot what he did . Any help??

The auxillary shaft drives a gear that is internally splined, which drives the oil pump. It's not uncommon for the internal spline teeth to strip, so the gear turns, but doesn't drive the oil pump. Check switch/sender, then I'd be looking at the drive gear.

Crisis over. Got a tip from a Washington member( very sharp dude) also makes headlight relay kits. Suggested removing oil filter, spark plugs and crank engine til oil comes out filter boss. Worked first time. Oil light goes out 1-2 seconds. All swell that ends well.
