Tomorrow I'll be taking my cylinder head to a shop to get new valve seals and guides installed. I'm finding it impossible to remove the remnants of the cam tower gasket from the head, especially on the exhaust side; It's really baked on. I've tried a razor blade and grinding it off with a wire wheel. No luck.

I've never worked with a machine shop before. Do they remove old gasketing material as part of the service, or do they expect me to do it? Do they typically have some special chemical method that makes short work of it?

If they've only been asked to replace guides, that's all they'll do, and the seats will have to be cut. If it's a full service, that should include cleaning it all up.
