Re: Best oil for my transmission - answer from Shell
This is getting more entertaining...(I'm retired and easily amused)
So I find the GL1 90 on NAPA website and call the local NAPA guy with the Part Number: NHF 65201
http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Catal ... 0006545685
He says we don't have it.
I ask for him to order it.
He says it's a US part number and he can't.
I asked him, what ever happened to NAFTA?
He replies...wait for it..."you didn't call NAFTA you called NAPA".
I hung up.
Then I thought, what would 4Uall do?
So I googled it and got these guys here in Ontario.

Just waiting for them to return my call, fingers crossed.

Tx for the offer but I figure the US is closer (100kms) than Sherbrooke (350kms). Although it's been years since I've been down that way, beautiful country. Unless I misunderstood, are you offering to deliver to Ottawa? If that's the case, les bieres sont sur moi!ORFORD2004 wrote:Do you want me to pick one gallon on my next trip?
Why can't Cdn UAP stores carry the same stock as the US. Does the need for GL1 disappear once you hit the border?
From what I now understand, UAP and NAPA figure GL1 is too thick for us Canadians.
Found a similar thread on a tractor site (gear oil for TO30) thanks to google.

I think I might call my local UAP store tomorrow, just to see what they don't have and bitch about free trade.

What about shipping and say it's anything but oil.

Re: Best oil for my transmission - answer from Shell
I'll just tell them it's liquid minerals and leave out the oil part.
Bill from Comat Motorsports just called me. Got to like a guy that does business at 10PM. He seems to know what he is talking about when it comes to oil and classic cars. He asked me many questions about my car and motor and when I told him my 1438 had 160,000 miles and burns a bit (OK alot more than a bit) he recommended their 20 50.

Might have to take a trip to Burlington and stock up.
I will have 2 liters of GL1 shipped here this week (fedex).
That was too EZ!

Although the Can. $ is in the tank compared to the US $, going to have to spring for a gallon or two of this
http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Resul ... d3%26N%3d0
I didn't realize Napa would be in a town with a population of perhaps 400. Oroville is about 65 K south of me.
Is this the oil you use in our cars in the States?
As mentioned you have a better chance of a ride to the space station than finding this oil in Canada.

That's what I used in my car. Fortunately I have a NAPA about 3 miles from my house!

Re: Best oil for my transmission - answer from Shell
Ive got mine out this summer for the first time in years, and have had a blast reacquainting. A blast and running it hard up a mountain, and must now buckel down and do the maintainance. I put redline mt90 in tranny at restoration. My failing memory says that i ran the napa (farm supply) product, but was not happy with the stiffer shift, and that the mt90 was/is way better.
Is there negative experiences with mt90 out there?
thanks

I guess I'm spoiled; I have a NAPA that carries GL-1 within walking distance of my house.
I propose a Smokey and the Bandit-style run to the border with a load of mineral oil for our Canadian cousins.

Re: Best oil for my transmission - answer from Shell
Redline mt90 is considered a GL4 gear oil. The higher you go on the GL scale, the higher the EP protection. While that's good for most sports cars, our Fiats fall into a different category in regards to our transmissions. Extreme pressure additives will cause the brass synchros to pit and corrode. Fiat calls for GL1 gear oil and if you can't find this, then SAE 50 motor oil will do just fine.mcpeach wrote: Is there negative experiences with mt90 out there?

Can't we just use extra virgin olive oil since it is an Italian car? (BTW, what exactly is "extra virgin?" Is it the extreme opposite of " sorta pregnant?")

Regarding the redline , I am led to believe that they don't use sulfur as the EP ingredient, but it is always worth phoning them up directly and tell them you have brass synchro in the box, here is the link from redline http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=46AriK wrote:Redline mt90 is considered a GL4 gear oil. and I quote for the MT-90
"Safe for brass synchros, as it lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage"
"Recommended for GL-1, GL-3, and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified"
I have redline in my box, however it is a 131 box which doesn't have brass synchro's and the rep here in OZ recommended the lightweight shockproof for me. I haven't had any issues at all.

Re: Best oil for my transmission - answer from Shell
I've been using MT-90 since rebuild, more than 25k on the clock. Changed it last year, and no glitter in the old stuff. Much easier shifting when the box is cold vs. GL-1
