Tranny leak
Tranny leak
How do I check the oil level in my manual 5 sod tranny in 1982 fiat 124?does it have a plug to check level like the differential? I have a minor leak that seems to be coming from the top, between two cross type supports . Just about center of door area. Thanks to all. I don't mind crawling under to check , just want to be headed in right direction.

Re: Tranny leak
I had an annoying leak towards the rear of the box. Couldn't find any leaks for the seal, gaskets etc ...
Turn out to be the seal on the top of the box were the gear selector goes in, PITA to fix.

Re: Tranny leak
SteveC, I'm not sure that is right. The fill hole I use has always been on the passenger side right were indicated in the photo. Can you show me a picture of your trans case with an oil fill on the drivers side. I'm always learning new things and may have been doing it wrong.

Re: Tranny leak
I wondered about that myself, Steve. I recalled filling from the driver's side and was surprised when i looked at this picture. I guess i need to crawl under my car to check. I know earlier trannies had electrical connections on the exhaust side.

Re: Tranny leak
Both the fill and drain are definitely on the right, or passenger side, one above the other.

Re: Tranny leak
I just discovered a tranny leak, as well. The pan is quite wet and dripping. I had been meaning to change the tranny oil anyway (even though the PO had a receipt showing recent replacement - I have no idea whether the proper oil was used). So I have a gasket and 12mm Allen key on order. Already have the GL-1. We'll see if the new gasket does the trick. Once I'm done I'll clean up the gearbox and spray some Gold Bond powder on it to identify whether the leak has another source. In any event, one should always keep one's tranny aloe-fresh.

Mine's leaking from the top too and its driving me crazy. I assume you had to drop the trans to fix the leak. Any details you can share?adrians wrote:I had an annoying leak towards the rear of the box. Couldn't find any leaks for the seal, gaskets etc ...

Re: Tranny leak
You may be able to get to it from the top - from inside the cabin by dropping the rear of the box, however I lived with in until I had to redo the clutch, so we fixed it with the box out of the car.Exit98 wrote:Mine's leaking from the top too and its driving me crazy. Re: Tranny leak
Steve, is it necessary to remove tranny to replace this selector shaft seal you described? Mine is just barely leaking . Actually , I tightened the three 10 mm bolts that hold pivot cover on and stopped most of leak. I was hoping there was a gasket on this cover I could replace but none is shown. Does tranny oil get down in that pivot area? Thanks do much for your expertise and time. Terry
