Don't be sorry John, you're doing exactly what I need. There's no way anyone can know what I've tried, so any and all suggestions are great. Whatever is causing the problem is obviously something I haven't checked yet, and who knows what that is, so I pretty much have to try everything. I just wish I were so electronically challenged. My dad was good at that, he was a TV technician and really good at it, but he was rude and selfish and died, leaving me in the lurch. I mean, how selfish is that?
I've taken the cover off of the AFM and checked that the contacts "make" when the flap is moved, they are contacting, but no pump running like it should. The ground in the trunk is good, the grounds on the plenum are good. I will check if the ignition switch is passing power to the control circuit. It does crank the starter, but no power to the pump and injectors as I said.
Thanks a bunch John, I'm trying the things you suggest that are new ideas.

Get rid of those sucky Fiat service wiring manuals. Everyone should have Brads wiring manual for their appropriate year. Absolutely the best. And they can be printed out large.

Right on Pope. I had Kinkos print me a blown up set of Brad's. I can actually follow a circuit with them. My eyes are pretty good for an old guy, but they weren't good enough to read those itty bitty pictures!

Hi Ron, hope somehow you had a good time on your adventure. I was lookin at the wiring schematics, and am playin a hunch. On the relays, there should be battery voltage at the pink/black wire from the fusebox. There also is batt voltage on the line with the in-line fuse which is brn/white. Voltage on the red/black wire is from the ignition switch. If you use a volt meter, back-probe these while connected to the relay and while trying to start. They all should read 10 volts or hopefully more. Also the green/black is the feed wire to the fuel pump, you could check at the fuel pump ( and grnd at pump ). The brown wire is the ground. You can check ground with a ohm meter, but I like to put a load across them with a bulb hooked to 12 volts and using wire for ground. Least ways I thought it would be a good basic thing to do. Good luck

Thanks Dave, I did have a good time at the campout. And the first day's drive with my mom was great. The 2-1/2 days in Grant's Pass was no vacation though.
I'll try the voltage checks you suggest. I know I'm not getting power to the pump though, and it will run if I take a 12V wire to it. Mike Mudge suggested maybe the connectors on the dual relay were reversed as they will plug in to the wrong side. I checked that and the pump started running full time, but still no injector pulse, so I put the connectors back the way they were.
I'm sure this is something simple, I just don't know how to check electrical components too well.
Thanks again for taking the time to study the diagrams.

I have been remiss. Here are some pictures of the Oregon campout. It's at Howard Prarie Lake which is on the top of the mountains. It's the most perfect campgrounds me or my mom have ever seen, and our family camps all the time. And I think we saw one or two bugs the whole time!

Now, back to my issue... Dave (or anyone really) I checked the voltage on the wires you suggested. I'm getting 12V on the red with black one at the relay with the starter engaged, and power at the brown with white wire with the key in the "on position. I may have to do like Craig and act like a contractor, sub out the wiring!

Ron, I have an extra ECU for my 81 FI. If you email me (lgratto@shaw.ca) or post the part number labelled on your ECU, we can confirm that it is the same one, and I can then mail it to you for testing purposes. I have it as a backup (paranoid) but no point in it sitting on the shelf if it will help you. Course it would take a few days to get to you from here.

That's the same as mine Launie. But, like I posted in Engine and Tuning, I replace the dual relay and now have signal to the fuel pump and pulse at the injectors. I don't think the ECU could be the reason it won't start at the point I'm at now. I sure appreciate the offer though, that's great. Unless someone with more savvy than me (not that hard to do) thinks it's somehow related. But I don't see how it could be a control problem though. See my other post and see if you agree.
