I have a whining noise between 50-63 mph on my 82 fiat 124. Speed up to 65 and don't hear it. Slow down to 50, no noise. Noise goes away upon acceleration(moderate) and goes away when coasting down hill. It is worse when engine has slight pull on it( straight and level driving, 50-63 mph)seems to be less when going around curve to right. I'm afraid to take a long trip for fear of a breakdown. Any ideas would be appreciated . Carrier bearing, gear and pinion, axle bearing?
Thanks to all you gearheads

Re: Whining noise
I have the same issue. I purchase the car 3 years ago and I was not able to do a test drive. I replace few gears and forks but not the bearing. That was 15k miles ago. The noise is like your not under acceleration but at cruzing at 45-55 mph. I will love to fix it.
Re: Whining noise
Surely someone besides us two have this problem. I am getting on in years and hearing not too good. Hard for me to tell where noise is coming from. One guy suggested axle bearing, I think I the driveshaft. Someone will help. They always do. Just be patient. I do not think it is in the transmission.

Re: Whining noise
Not that I know of. I bought it from bro in law. He recently replaced an axle seal that was leaking. Could that be the culprit ?( axle bearing)
