Fuel injection hiss

Post by PureStyle »

Hi , I can't help but hear the fuel pump hiss all the time on my 2000i, is this normal or do I have an air leak?

Are you certain the noise is coming from the fuel pump? The fuel pump shouldn't have anything to do with air. A hiss is more likely to be a vacuum leak.

Where is the hiss coming front, front or back, left or right? The fuel pump is under the passenger side rear fender/rocker area. If it is hissing then it has some bad bearings and is likely to die soon.

the fuel pump on an FI car is underneath the car behind the drivers seat. When it runs it makes noise. get under there and see if that is the source.

I wouldn't describe a fuel pump's sound as a hiss. It's more of a whirr, or perhaps a whine if it's going bad. As the previous poster said, that's going to be coming from underneath the driver's side. Air leaks are going to be heard in the engine bay, primarily.

I hear a kind of "vacuum hiss" around the area of my air flow meter, which I took to be normal as I believe I have eliminated air leaks. Perhaps Brad can confirm whether a sound of air rushing through the AFM is normal or not?

So, where is your sound coming from?

Edit: Come to think of it, before mine went bad, it was more of a buzzing.

A fuel pump is definitely a whirr. I've been playing "Bosch Roulette" with my old GTI for 2'000 km now. :D

Diagnosing what something sounds like over a forum is senseless. If the noise is coming from the passenger side rear of the car, near the tire, then the pump is wonky. If the noise is coming from the engine bay then you probably have an air leak. If the noise is occurring and something smells like gas, figure out where the gas leak is coming from.

After more searching the sound is coming from behind driver side under rear seat, fuel filter area.

Under the rear seat outside the car? If so, the fuel filter and fuel pump are attached to the underside of the car and are less than 6" apart.

Yes, the fuel filter and pump are located under the car and are less than 6" apart. On every single fuel injected Spider ever made.

Check all the hoses, air and fuel

Hiss = air. If your fuel pump is ingesting air along with fuel then you're going to have a very short lived fuel pump
