What does this go to?

Post by kmac33 »

After stripping the interior on my 74 Spider, I have discovered a wiring plug that goes through the transmission tunnel on the passenger side. This plug is not connected to anything. What is this plug supposed to connect to? There are also a few other wires going into the same whole that aren't attached to anything - but are secured to the transmission tunnel outside of the vehicle - what are these supposed to connect to?
Any help is appreciated.

Do the wires pass through the tunnel into the passengar compartment or do they just run along the tunnel? The only wires I am aware of that pass through the transmission tunnel are for the reverse light switch. The connector should be under your shifter boot. Do your backup lights work?

A grey wire should be for the emission control switch that is under the clutch pedal and goes to a switch on the transmission. Another is a white wire that goes from the transmission to the backup lights.

Thank you guys for the replies. I guess I need to see if the reverse lights work - will have to hook the battery back up tomorrow and check. If one wire is for emissions, it makes sense that it is not connected to anything - all of the emissions parts were removed a number of years ago.
Thanks again!

Looks like one set of wires is to the reverse lights - they currently do not work. I have located the two locations on the transmission that should have wire connections in one of the service manuals. Next step is to try and locate them on the actual transmission and see what happens when I hook everything back up. I'm wondering why they were disconnected in the first place. My dad does not remember(he was the owner since 74, until passing the car to me).

I have confirmed via the wiring diagram that one set of wires should go to the reverse light switch - can anyone clue me in to the exact location of this switch on the tranny - my manual doesn't say which switch is which.
The other set of wires(with the plug on the end) goes to the button switch on the tranny for "electrovalve 22". Can anyone tell me what the function of electrovalve 22 is?

The reverse light switch is mounted on the back of the transmission, passenger side. It threads into it's hole in the rear transmission housing from the rear (threads are on front of switch).

The electrovalve, I believe, is a seperate switch that mounts into the transmission from the side (passenger side, a bit forward of the reverse switch), and controlled something on the carb that kept fuel burning between 3rd and 4th gears during decelleration. The details are in another post here somewhere, but the long and short is that it is not important, and likely isn't working anyways.

Tripp,
Thank you for the information. I will have to get under the car and see if my reverse switch is still there and the wires just disconnected or if it has been removed. I would like to get the reverse lights hooked back up and working.
The electrovalve sounds like it was part of the emissions system. As far as I can tell, all of the emissions items have been removed so I'm not surprised that is no longer hooked up.
Thanks again for the help!

If your reversing switch is removed, you've probably left a trail of transmission fluid wherever you've been...

I've seen a couple of these switches where the connecting 'tang' has snapped off, rendering the switch unserviceable. You might have the same issue.

Okay guys, I finally got motivated enough to get under the car and try and fix my reverse light issue. I just want to confirm that the reverse light switch should be located at the rear of the tranny, up by the gearshaft assembly. If that is the location, mine has been removed and the hole plugged with a bolt. Looks like I need to buy a new switch.
If that is not the location, please let me know where else to look.
Thanks,
Kevin

it should be located on the rear of the tranny, at the bottom, pointed towards the back of the car

Mark,
Thank you for the additional info. I finally found a picture of the exact location in my Brooklands manual. I have confirmed that my switch has been removed and in it's place is a bolt. Looks like I will have to get a new switch and hope everything works when I hook the wiring back up. Not sure why the switch would have just been removed.
Thanks again for everyone's help on this topic.
