Tranny noise

Post by wqqdster »

Hi!

The trans in my wife's 93K mile '78 (she bought it new) has gradually been making more noise. In neutral it sounds like a bad bearing, first gear is very noisy (whining), second is pretty quiet, third is noisy, fourth is silent and fifth is a little quieter than first and third. There isn't any vibration coming through the shifter.

Anybody want to take a guess as to which bearing(s) are bad?

Thanks,
Gary O

You probably have bad bearing on the counter shaft, but until it is taken apart and inspected you are just guessing.

Why don't you change them all? With the synchro, the springs and the forks. Then you are shure that you are good for long time.

That's the most obvious solution.... thanks for the link.

I got the trans out and spent some time with my stethoscope (sp?) spinning the shafts. The input shaft bearing had some play and was the easiest to get to so that's the one I changed. Took some fancy gear puller fabricating. The three piece bearing was replaced with a one piece.

I got everything back together and the bearing noise in neutral is gone!! Bazinga!! I'll have it back on the road this week and look forward to seeing if the rest of the gear noise it gone also.

Thanks for the help and the laughs!

It's normal to have no noise on neutral if you change the input shaft bearing. But I don't think it will change anything on gears.

The noise in neutral was so loud I was assuming that it may also be causing noise when in gear. "Gear" noise probably wasn't the best term to use.....

I finally got all of my other chores done and was able to finish the work on our Spider. The transmission is silent now when driving with a very faint whine in third gear but I have to work to hear it. Just a couple more things to fix and it'll be back to being a real car again.
