Consumer Reports says to ditch our old cars.

Post by 70spider »

5 reasons to call it quits on our old cars, according to MSN/Consumer Reports Magazine. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/research ... ar-BBjttcF
Of the five reasons the only one (to me) that makes sense is the safety issue.
The cost efficiency claim is a bust. I have a 2002 Mazda Protege5 and a 1970 Fiat Spider and according to the article I need to replace them with a new car.
If I purchased a new Mazda3 (purchase price 25K) my basic costs vs. my old cars would be:
ImageThe difference in basic cost per year vs the Protege5 and Spider are sizable chunks of cash especially when you consider the current economic situation.
The most important reason to keep our old cars is every time we go somewhere, inevitable, someone stops us and asks about our “cool” cars. For most they go down memory lane and tell you a story about when they where young and the cars they had. Plus it is pretty cool to tell them the reason the car is still around is due to your hard work and love for the classic automobile :D .

Consumer Reports has always been about safety and MPG...Zero fun factor with this bunch.

If I need a new dishwasher, I'll check them out. :)

Years ago, they said the X1/9 had dangerous handling. I've ignored them ever since.

Though definitely capable as a daily driver, I do not use mine for that purpose. It is a hobby/collector's car. What I spend on fuel, insurance, etc., is irrelevant....it is all about the fun of it.

I have never been very impressed with consumer reports. I guess it would be different if you paid someone to do all of your work.
