So, it's popping out of gears...

Reverse is obvious (and embarrassing... if it didn't grab long enough first time to reverse fully, have to re-engage), noticed it in first the other day.

Clutch? Clutch adjust?... or tranny rebuild/replace?
Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil, we have decided to turn off the light at the end of the tunnel. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Yup, tranny repair. It will just get worse. Time for a rebuild.

Have you drained the trans oil and replaced it with the proper stuff, NAPA GL 1?

Sounds like the trans has had it, but it couldn't hurt to try, you might get lucky.

Not that hard to do. Like yuo say a great fall winter project if you can muddle through. Just try not to grind the gears or you may find that you have to replace those as well. Popping out is usually sliders and forks along with a syncro and spring or two. Also a great chance to inspect/replace any worn bearings.

In most cases, worn shift forks are not allowing the car to get completely into gear and it pops out right away. Every time it pops out, you are wearing synchos. So the sooner you can get to this, the less expensive the repair job will be. Also, most wear in the shift forks come from resting your hand on the shift lever.
