Tie rod boot...need a second opinion or three....

Post by njoconnor »

I'm swapping out the tie rod boots on the 72, and need some advice. Picked up some replacements from one of the vendors, got the joint apart, old boot just fell off, no retaining rings or anything (the rest of the steering boots appear to be the same: failed/failing rubber, no retaining rings/clips). Placed the new boot on the joint, and the aluminum ring at the base just doesn't want to go over the edge of the joint and re-locate into the slot. Pic follows:

Blue arrow is the base ring on the new boot. Red arrow points to the groove/slot on the joint. I reassembled the joint earlier today, got the fastening nut to it's specified 25 ft/lbs, and there is no play in any direction. Wheels steer with no hesitation or interference.

Will this ride as is? Is there a tool which would persuade that ring into the slot?

Thanks

the boot won't seal in the current position. Its been a while but I think i used a deep well socket to tap the boot into place.

Wondered if that might work. According to the calipers, might need a 40mm socket. Also thinking a ball joint tool kit might work; have to go see if the local car parts place rents one in the needed size.

Thanks!
