I bought one on Ebay for 24 bucks including shipping.........beings how I'm gonna be driving this thing till I croak how could I resist that price...........thanx for all you help.........heres hoping that it works and I don't have to rebuild the caliper or I'll be asking you how to do that.....over the 45 years I have owned the car I have taught myself how to do most everything on it.....but rebuilding the calipers is one thing I haven't done yet......I'm sure I could pull it off but its scary doing something for the first time like when I first pulled the distributor out 20 years ago or first time I pulled the head off and put it back together and it ran........I was soooooooooooo proud.......being a dumbshit actor.....

I was in a shop "20yrs ago"and watched the mechanic use air to push the cylinder out of a front caliper.
he had his hand in the way,and he got pinched.luckly not traped in there.
you can remove the piston by pulling off the caliper and push the peadal until the piston pushes all the way out
then remove the bleeder screw and line the inside walls should be clean straight and as little cuts from
the piston if it went kittywomass
then pull the seal its on the top of the hole, clean the rim where the seal goes and install the seal
use vasoline on the seal, then push the piston in put a pad on it and c clamp it down.
then put on new bleeder screw and line

if the bleeder screw broke you can learn how to remove one
if you think it needs to be drilled and taped get a new caliper
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

It might help to clarify exactly what you're trying to do. Just trying to screw the piston further in to install new pads, or did you already remove the piston completely (why) and are now trying to screw it back in? Trying to remove the caliper (why)?

I am having no luck getting the piston back in so I can install new pads......so I thought I might have better luck if it was in hand and if not I could replace the whole caliper........it screwed in at first but when I got to about a half or three quarters of an inch from flush it just turns but doesn't go in anymore.......and using the caliper tool didn't work.

I want to know how to disconnect the emergency brake cable so if I need to I can just replace the whole caliper and be done with it.......

Did you back off the adjuster on the emergency brake handle first? If its set tight you will not be able to screw the pistons in all the way. If the cable is sticking and not releasing all the way you won't be able to get them flush either.

Spring pressure is all that holds the cable ends on the caliper and maybe a little rust. With the cable adjuster on the emergency brake lever backed off all the way just pull the ball end out of the arm on the caliper and then work the ferrules out.

If you look under the car there is a harness going from the emergency brake handle to the rear calipers. Where it goes from a single cable to a Y is a nut that lets you tighten or loosen the emergency brake cable. The intent is so you can adjust it so that when pulling the lever up it only takes 2-3 clicks to engage the brake. It will be pretty evident how to loosen the nut to put slack in the cable.

here is part of a post I made when I did my first brake job. Hope it helps.

My mechanic told me to make sure that I left the slot in the piston perpendicular so it lines up with the bump on the caliper. He said this allows the caliper to slide on past the bump on the back of the brake pad. I had not know this and I know this has probrably been posted here. I had the slot turned verticle and the caliper was jamming on the bump on the pad!

Tips I learned. Have a propane torch. I keep a garden hose handy when using it. Use liquid wrench generously over days. Get the right tools. Read and search this form. Get spare cooper washers as the flex hose didnt supply them. Clean and return tools you use promptly with a coffee in hand. Have beer in the fridge. Patience and persistance

If you have the owners manual adjusting the emergency/parking brake is covered in there very nicely. Basically you follow the cables toward the front of the car where you will find them passing through a yoke with a double adjusting nut on them and just loosen both nuts.

I want to thank everyone for all the help and suggestions...........and let you all know that I am a complete dunderhead........before removing the emergency brake cable I tried one more thing..........loosened the bleeder valve and vwala the piston turned all the way in..........I don't get it because there was plenty of room in the master cylinder but I'm not questioning it because I am so relieved that I got it to go in without having to replace it.......thanx again everyone..
and the advice to line up the slot so that the pad can slide into place with the bump on the back of it is a game changer.....
