Hi everyone!
Just picked up a 1980 Fiat but I'm trying not to get too excited yet (but of course am looking everywhere I can for bits of info like this forum). There's a title situation that I'm trying to work through. Apparently the car has been sold a few times without the new owner transferring the title properly. So now I have a PA title that was signed over in '97 but never transferred. And the guy it was signed to sold the car to the guy I bought it from - ah this is going to be fun. So I do have the real title, just a bit of a mess with it
About the car, it doesn't run. Unfortunately its an early 80 model so its carburated. But with carburation, a mismatched hood, and the lack of running aside, I couldn't resist. My wife begged me to get it and I wasn't going to argue! Especially since its very original. I also have a '67 Mustang so I know what neglect can look like. Other than some minor dents and bruises, its in really good shape. No tears in the seats, no rust underneath, and even the rubber seals look like new. I think its been garaged for life. I know it has been at least since '97. The odometer reads 76k which I wouldn't be surprised if its correct.
I'm going to throw some PB Blaster in the plug holes and let it sit for a few weeks before trying to crank it by hand. Peaking inside the oil cap, the heads look nice and shiny inside so I'm thinking maybe I can avoid an immediate rebuild if all goes well. The oil also looks pretty good.
Anyway, I'm not going to put a lot of time/money into until its officially in my name.
On a side note, does anyone happen to know if towing with the real wheels on the ground is ok? This occured to me after it took the 10 mile journey to my house.
Well, hi again. Hopefully I'll be talking to you soon about my project rather than a parts car!

Welcome to world of Fiat Fun. The best part of your story is your wife begging you to buy the car, good stuff. Good luck with the title.

it's okay to flat tow it with the stick in neutral, but a word of warning; make sure the tranny and diff have fluid. Also inspect the driveline to make sure the flex joint isn't broken. Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Welcome aboard Pete. Good luck with the car. New Jersey can't possibly be as bad as California where DMV concerened. Here, they act like having a title the latest owner never changed over is something they've never seen before. Good luck with the paper work too.

Welcome to the forum. Good luck with your title. You'll probably just have to spend a lot of time chasing people down and getting the proper notorized documents. My friend here in Ohio had a similar issue with a car he purchased out of state. He gave up trying to get a title after about six weeks as it was just a $800 winter car and wasn't worth all of the time and hassle to get the title. They certainly don't make it easy! Sounds like you have a nice project, though. As long as it hasn't been attacked by rust, you can pretty much fix anything as parts are plentiful and usually inexpensive.

I'm new too. One of the spiders I got I think I'm going to have a nightmare time with its title too as it had been a stollen car and for some odd reason supposedly has two titles with two difrent owners. Not sure I need to worry about it though if I'm just gona use it for parts. Well I hope I don't. Anyhow, welcome!

Thanks everyone. The stolen car situation does sound a bit worse than mine. I'm hoping its not too bad since its fairly obvious what happened - hopefully someone at DMV uses logic to make decisions. I'm guessing the state's biggest concern about it would be that they did not collect sales tax on the 2 prior sales. I'm just hoping that the guy I bought it from can get in contact with the guy he bought it from. If that guy has "disappeared," it will make things much harder.
And yes, my wife is as excited about the car as I am. She can't wait to take drives to the shore and around the Chesapeake. She's girly in most ways except she loves cars and even drives stick. Although I don't think she'll love breaking down so hopefully I can make this car dependable enough!
