Rear Sway Bar Alternative

Post by toplessexpat »

Hey All -

I've been wanting to do something to tighten up the back end of my 1800. My favorite parts supplier was out of rear sway bars (temporarily), and me being impatient I tried an alternative that I'd read about.

Today sptcoupe and I spent a happy half day fitting an extra set of trailing arms inboard the existing set.

The result - a great tight read end. Very fun for spirited driving.

Just the long ones (trailing ;))... Had to pull off one side and do it again when we put the ebrake cable the wrong side .... But all in all very satisfying.

Did you just use longer bolts and pair them up?

tryed and tested solution in the eastern europe, lo-cost alternative to sway bar, usually done on ladas.

check your trailing arms every once in a while, they tend to crack where tube meets the bushing because now they're stressed way much more than before and in a way they were never meant to be stressed.

snapping lower railing arm while on the move can ruin your day.

people who go down that route in central europe and have acess to both fiat and lada parts use trailing arms off fiat 132 or argenta, much stronger and same lenght. downside - twice as heavy

Yep - will keep an eye on them, thanks for the heads up.

Will also put a large washer (think seat belt sized washer) on the inside to keep the bushings tight.
