choke has to be closed manually to start car

a 1976 124 spyder motor runs okay but choke needs to be closed manually to start the car. Any ideas where to start to
try and fix this or what to check? A brand new purchase

can be either and manual, electric, or hot water choke. look at the carb to tell which type. (cable, wires, or hoses). start with making sure the butterfly is not sticky.
