Early Spider Windshield Wiper Size

Post by fiathead »

Does anyone know when the Spiders changed the spindle size for the wiper arms? The spindles on my '69 are smaller than they were on my '77 or '76. I had no idea they were different until I scored a nice set of wiper arms from a parts car at the local pick a part yard. Turns out, they are too large to fit. Most places that carry wiper arms list them as one size fits all years, but that's not accurate.

I'm guessing the best course of action will be to rebuild the wiper cowl using the linkage from a '76 Spider I parted out. Until I can do that, I need to source a wiper arm and don't want to stock up on ones I cannot use right now.

Thanks Jay, but I was talking about the spindle size. On the early cars, the spindle size of the splined shaft you mount the wiper arms to is smaller than the later cars. I was just trying to figure out when the cutover was. Your response does bring up another question though. I did not know there was a blade size difference in the newer cars. Is there any downside to running the later 15" blades on an early car? I was playing with them the other day and noticed that the blades did seem smaller on my '69 than they need be.

Sorry Tim I read it too fast

As far as the sizes of wipers go, I say, as long as they do not touch or go over the edges you should be fine
