Cape May, NJ, September 16-19

Post by baltobernie »

Eight of us enjoyed "California weather" at the Jersey Shore this week. Cool nights, warm days and great company made for a memorable mid-week vacation.

A scenic 100-mile drive from Annapolis, MD had us at The Buttery (highly recommended) in Lewes, DE for lunch, followed by a 17-mile ferry trip across Delaware Bay.

Quite a few civilians asked us about our cars before and during the trip.

I'm pleased to report that, contrary to urban legend, none of the cars rusted away during the voyage :D

Cape May is at the southern tip of the peninsula, and bills itself is the nation's first seashore resort, with city dwellers taking the train to escape New York City summertime climate. Much of the town's architecture is unchanged from the 1800's.

The four couples occupied the entire B&B, and we had two wine competitions along with plenty of merriment, including a tasting at Cape May Brewing Co.

It is most likely a capital offense to serve bad Italian food in New Jersey, and we had several wonderful meals, all within walking distance of our B&B.

Tim went out one morning to find a note on his windshield, offering a Spider hardtop nearby. He stashed it in the B&B's shed until our return. Zip ties and other non-factory devices were used to secure this, uh, "cosmetically challenged" accessory for the drive home.

These kinds of trips are what makes owning a vintage roadster worthwhile. I hope you get to enjoy yours in the remaining days of North American summer.

Looks like a great trip. Thanks for the photos. We love Cape May also. I was stationed there in 1963. Seeing all the Victorian homes restored and the community so bright and clean is exciting. We spent our 40th wedding anniversary at a BB there. It's about a 3.5 hour drive for us. None of our Fiats have been there yet. So after your post wife and I will be planning another Fiat trip.

Would be a ferry ride for you too, eh? Not too bad a trip once you get on the Garden State. Post-Labor Day is the choice time for roadster driving in these parts, but we're thinking about another trip at Christmas time; the town decorates itself nicely (not Quebec City-nice, but much closer!).

If you go, put Frescos restaurant on your list. Great food, and like much of Cape May, BYOB.

You might also like the aviation museum at NAS Wildwood. All the exhibits are indoors, and hands-on.

Thanks for the additional photos. Pretty sure I have met some of you. The Wildwood NAS Museum is a great piece of aviation history. We have been there a few times. The base was a flight training station. Young men with little flight training were put in high performance aircraft and had to either fly or die. The list of flight student deaths and photos is startling.

I was trained to be an Avionic Tech in the Coast Guard and after my 4 year hitch that ended up being a rewarding 48 year civilian career. I retired this past April

Thanks again for the photos. If you go next year my wife and I would love to meet your group.
