I wanted to clean and paint the pulley on my alternator. So using belt to hold the pulley I tried to loosen front nut on pulley but after a few turns the nut and bolt both are coming out. I now can't get it to screw in or out.
Help, ideas?

My bolt/housing corroded together. After several days of Blaster and rotating/driving the bolt, it came out. After bolt removal, a clean up was easy and parts were reused.

The alternator shaft has a woodruff Key in it and the pulley halves and the fan are notched for the key. If the pulley halves you are holding have moved off the key in the shaft they no longer are holding the shaft from turning.

OK, thanks spider. Will cram myself into the space and see if I can get the alternator out and reintroduce the Woodbridge key. . Thanks again, this makes sense and an easy, somewhat, repair.

Sorry. I misread the request for info. I was speaking of the pivot bolt the alternator mounts on.

OK, became the incredible shrinking man and managed to get the alternator out. Not much skin left on hands though. After moving, shaking cursing, stopped for an espresso, came back and continued some more and then bolt/shaft seemed to go back in and catch. Tightened and every thing seems fine, pulley turns fine. After putting front of engine (timing belt problems, pulleys, TDC Mark, accessory pulley hole, NOTHING lined up according to diagram. ) back together will see if it works. Guess I lucked out in getting Woodbridge key slotted right.
