installed guido & got a new noise : (

Post by steviebsf »

Hello All,
Installed new guido to replace one with a missing section and after installation I have a new noise that occurs on mid-heavy acceleration in first gear only. sounds like a quick thwap thwap thwap thwap and then goes away. I noticed how close some of the bolts are on the flex coupling to those on the transmission. Is it hitting?

it is difficult to look under the car while quickly accelerating...

any thoughts appreciated.

If you have a set of good jack-stands I have had the jacks on the rear axle and had the gear in first and with a broom handle poked the gas pedal. Front wheels were heavily blocked. I found the drive shaft wobble from the caps not seated in the rear u-joints properly.
If the bolts on the Guibo are back to front, I believe they can contact the tranny housing.

Nothing should be hitting if installed correctly. I have heard of the guibo hitting the trans mount crossmember when the trans mount failed. Another possibility is a weak driveshaft center support and the driveshaft is wobbling.

narfire: thanks for your input: Half the bolts on the guido go one way, half the other. Do you know which is correct?

Vandor & Narfire: I only replaced the guido and can't imagine the drive shaft out of balance suddenly but, stranger things have happenend. worth taking a look.

thanks both

Anyone else experienced this?

If I remember correctly, 3 bolts are shorter than the other. Perhaps one was accidently swapped around. makes me think though that with a short bolt in a "long" hole the nut can't be done up. Maybe you managed somehow :?
I thought they all went from front to back, but it has been a couple of years since I had to deal with it.

I believe it is called a "guibo"and I believe that 3 go front to back and 3 go vice versa

this might help

As I recall, I had an issue like that many moons ago. It had to do with the direction the bolt was inserted. If it is hitting you should see a witness mark on the tranny. You can jack a rear tire off the ground, put it in neutral and rotate the driveline by hand and look for contact. You dont need to crawl under there with the driveline turning.

Azruss: thats just it. it only happens on med - heavy acceleration in 1st. I'm assuming the torque is twisting the rubber slightly. The closest thing on the tranny to hit is actually a threaded post. I may have to get in the and carefully cut some off. If thats the only problem, i'm good with that solution, however i want to make sure something more complicated isn't also going on.

thanks for your thoughts.

your symptoms would make me look at the driveline center bearing and pillow block. Particularly the rubber support in the pillow block. I new guibo would provide more rigidity at the front of the drive shaft exposing issues at the joint.
