Re: Brake lines....Uh oh.....Update.. :)
Yesterday I decided to get the rears ready for the rebuilt calipers inbound from Chris Obert (due Thurs!!), hang the replacement rear flexible lines, and redo the front brake lines (flip 'em 180 to be correct), and see what I could do about the non-moving calipers.
Rear work went pretty well; old calipers came off without much persuasion needed, new hoses all hooked up and covered/slacked awaiting the calipers. I replaced the compensator hose with no issues, and zip tied the lever up to open the valve. So far so good.
Moved to the fronts, and got both off without issue, careful to bag the wedges in separate baggies marked top and bottom. Took brake cleaner and wire brushes (small hand brushes as well as a drill mounted 4 in brass) and cleaned/polished all the caliper surfaces, then scrubbed the wedges down. I was generous with the synthetic caliper grease, and was pleasantly surprised by two results. First, the calipers went right back into the yoke with a "tilt" just like Haynes claimed 30 years ago (had to tap the wedges out to get the calipers off the yoke on removal). Second, once bolted back onto the yoke and in place, both calipers were able to be moved just that little bit laterally! And....both rotors/hubs turned freely!! First time doing ANYTHING with brakes in my life. Could not have done it without the forum! Can't wait for the rears to get here.....
Now on the annual "put away" task list: lube the wedges.

Re: Brake lines.....Update..Finished!!!
The rear calipers arrived a day early (Wed), got them assembled and staged on Saturday. Sunday the prospective bride and groom stopped by for a cookout, and I could tell they were a little concerned at the sight of a jacked up Fiat with no rear brakes (wedding is a month out)! Started early on Monday, mounted the new calipers, checked all the new brake hoses, and started bleeding the system. As usual, first wheel was learning. After that, I was surprised at how fast it went. At the end, very firm, solid brake pedal. Off to the cousins for another cookout (and a test ride, of course!). Some fairly hard left braking pull on the way out, but it all but disappeared on the way home. We also had two very intense downpours yesterday, but not a drop inside the new top/weatherstripping.
This was the first time I ever tried any brake work on any car, and I'm really happy with the results. Could not have done it without all the posts and encouragement on this forum. Some recc's for others wading in for the first time:
1. You'll see a number of posts recommending flare wrenches. Get 'em. And PB Blaster, used liberally.
2. Lots of zip lock baggies. I made sure I put the caliper wedges in separate, labelled bags (along with their retaining pins). Then all of an individual brake's parts into one large one. Saved a bunch of "Oh sh%ts".
3. It's a few more bucks, but pop for speed bleeders and a hand vacuum pump kit. Saves annoying one's spouse with an hour of brake pumping.
4. As soon as you have clean fluid in the lines, close the bleeder, stand up, stretch, ....and then immediately go check/top off the brake fluid reservoir. Especially after the RR brake. Amazing how much/fast that particular line uses....
First trip to work today, then a longer one to one of my outreach locations on Thursday (with some great back roads!). From here on out, it's all tweaking; the big work is done.

Re: Brake lines.....Update..Finished!!!
Well....uh....yeah. Finished. Not so much. Steve and Mike are going to have to wait a bit; seems Blue 72 has other plans.
I wrote the follow up this morning over coffee # 1. Didn't have to be at work till 1200 today, so I planned to take the car on some short shopping ereend runs. Went out, took the cover off...andnoticed a small circle of fluid near under the car near RF tire. Hmmmm. Clear and slippery. Checked radiator; nope, full. Checked brake reservoirs. Inboard (rears) full. Outboard, fronts....much lower than when filled yesterday. Topped it off, did the errands (side note: tanked the car for the first time since the top installation; got 27.9 mpg inmixed city/highway driving, including at least 90 minutes of stationary "run time" in the driveway!). Got back...reservoir down again. Visually and tactilely checked both front calipers and the hoses/bleeders: all dry. Looked at the drip ooint again, and noted it was coming from the inside of the passneger side of the engine compartment, under the coolant overflow bottle. While feeling around under there, my arm bumped into a rough portion of the overflow bottle...which turned out to be a hacked up patch from the PO, plugging a nice slit hole in the coolant tank. Now I have two leaks!
Inquiries sent out on the coolant tank replacement. I won't have a lot of time right now to thoroughly search for the brake leak, but I'm suspecting it's a metal line leak somewhere under the coolant tank (the Dakota is in the "fix it" spot in the garage, awaiting new front pads/rotors). Any thoughts/ideas welcome. I'm hoping I don't have to replace the metal lines, simply because of the location; I'm pretty comfy with bleeding by now. But, whatever it takes to get the car set for the wedding. And...it was a blast diving around on the errands this morning, which is really the whole point, n'est-ce pas?

Re: Brake lines.....Update..Finished!!!
I just did mine last weekend. And I rebuilt the rear calipers while I was at it. It wasn't an easy project (the calipers), but it was a great learning experience for me and my teenage son.
I installed Speed Bleeders (without any tape) and they seem to seal nicely without it. I bought some line clamps from Harbor Freight to pinch the newly-replaced soft lines from the master cylinder reservoir, to keep the 'ooze' to a minimum. I think that every toolbox should have a set of these.

Re: Brake lines.....Update..Finished!!!
I almost hesitate to post this, but.....
A couple of days f short driving trips, and suddenly no more funny little wet spots under the car. Brake reservoir levels have been unchanged (both full to the shoulder). Took routes which required lots of braking (they also happened to be back roads... ), so the system is at pressure. I duct-taped the slit leak in the coolant tank as a temporary measure, and thoroughly dried the surfaces underneath...still dry. Truck brakes this weekend, then back on the jacks for the Fiat and a long look at all the fastening points. I no longer believe I have a leaking line, but I'll be searching carefully.
The drives have also seemed to resolve a high idle issue I was having. After warming up, the engine would idle at 2k to 2.5k. I was about to break out my copy of Brad's carb guide, when the last several trips saw the idle settling down to .9-1K every time. I'm thinking the linkage must have loosened up after its 20 year nap! But...one more thing to keep an eye on.
Thanks. Alan, watch for a pm....

No rush, Alan. I'm hip deep in Dakota this weekend. That, and hanging at the Jefferson County Sheep & Wool Festival. Pat's doing a spinning demo. I get to watch border collie trials. We both get to eat good 'cue. Win/win!
