How do you put on a Hood Seal

Post by Dougieb »

Hi All,

Finishing up my Spider.
I need to replace the Hood Seal (the one closest to the windshield.
I am getting a nasty smell in the car and hope this will help.
I searched pics of engine compartments to see where it goes.
That is not the problem.

The question is HOW it goes on.
The simplest would be to just screw it straight down to the cowling with the screws already there.
But will those (five or so) screws be enough to keep it in place?
Or should there be a rod/bracket/clips that should be screwed down to keep it in line?
Not sure how it should go because it was missing when I got the car.

Thanks in advance.

Mine has rubber washers, & yes just screw it down with the curved part facing engine bay

This should help

Didn't the 1972 have a different seal than the newer models?!

With the cowling screws removed slide the seal edge (the edge with the cutouts) so that the cutouts align with the screw holes. Replace screws. The tension of the cowling held by the screws holds the seal edge in place. Each screw should have a washer. If you are concerned about scratches or rust (that will develop) then use a hard rubber washer in between the body and the metal washer.

I'm referring to a picture of it installed on a 1438cc Spider and I'm wondering why in the hell I ever sold that car, because the guy who owns it hasn't driven it since 2008. Grrrrrr.
