Tappy, I'm a little out of my depth on this point. But my distributor is leaking AROUND the shaft, because it is missing the gasket that seals it. My understanding is that there is also another gasket that prevents oil from coming up INSIDE the shaft. In my case, the missing gasket causes oil to drip on the manifold and smoke, but I don't have oil inside the distributor. if it is coming up inside the distributor (take the cap off and see if it is), then it will make the points or pickup oily and the engine would not run).

So look under the dizzy cap and see.

And yes, I would think your distributor is still usable. It will need a thorough cleaning to get the oil out of it, but then it should be alright, if the points or pickup are not damaged. They probably are okay. Again, I'm trying to be helpful, but don't rely on my advice

So glad to hear you have her back safe and sound. Beautiful dash and very tasteful overall look! I would be very happy if mine turns out looking that good someday.

She is a truly lovely signora ,Tappy. It is easy to see why you have soldiered on thru all the little issues! Could you go into your dash treatment.Do I understand the wood is a faux finish applied over the original?

so here's an update on the healtcare program from my Belladonna
I've removed the head and replaced all the gaskets , when i did this i've notiched that one of the cam lobes was damaged
With some help from over the forum i've replaced the cams , hoping this would solve the problem ...
Other dings i've fixed are the fuelleak fom the carb , and the oil return ring from the dizzy
After some struggle to get the timing belt back on , set the dizzy correct i was able to strat her up today
I really felt like a victory ...But joy was really quick temepered :(
The knocking sound still exists , the "ploffing" sound on the exhoustside is gone
Now the problem will be in the undersite of the motor , maybey the bearings ? any advice on probable couse ?
Symtoms , loud knocking sound when not ideling , but around 2000-3000 RPM , damaged lobe on second cylinder camshaft

Can i work (replace) the bearing(s) with the engine still in the car or do i really need to get it out ?

and now ?

Post by Tappy »

Now engine's out today , doesn't look good , some odd things encounterd there Like the the belhousing was only conected with one bolt , the starter came of without using a wrench (by hand), there's 3 gallons on oil-dirt-roadkill-and-some unidentified-things spreaded open over the transmission , underside , engine , there was no transmission cover plate so same stuff in the belhousing most lightly there are some leaking oilseals here and there.. anyway , after started , the last time the engine completle blocked up so probably some head damage , didnt got the head off yet becouse of a vw beetle moterstand didn't adjust, working on that one

while underthere i've notiched some serious wear on the rubber parts on the suspension , cant be a good sign i might want to look in to this. the breakproblem was also on still the agenda , To get things worse i'm about to need the car as a daily driver in 4 wheeks instead of 2 months (and car-control pass is needed fo the insurace)

So , i'm having a dillemma here , how can i make this work ? Options are : rebuilding the head , and hope nothing else coused the original problems (camshaftlobe, raltle and roll) , getting a "resonally"priced 1995 cc lancia engine and hoping some minor mods do the trick , buy a 1756cc fiat 124 engine for a "not reasonable at all" price (can i transplant the weber idfs that where on my 1995cc ,to the 1756 head ?) Not beeing the first replacement engine , the newly wed wife is not that entousiatic with the new costs so i've got to think with my hand on my wallet , and have to work like i've got a firecracker up the ass !! Now fastedst would be the fiat 1.8 swap (i guess) , cheapest would be the lancia (if no more costs then belt , seals, waterpumpand some transplants) , most challanging would be repairing the busted block however i might underestimate that ...

Anything could go wrong on either choise , iff so, i'm in it for the money (even got my iPhone on ebay to lower the costs)
I really dont want to have to trade the spider to a fiat panda from aunt hupeldepup , so got to keep the wife pleased

Any advise ?

Its tough to need to depend on a 30+ year old car for basic transportation. I have a rule with mine. Things get done whenever. I do not set done dates, and I must enjoy workin on it!!! Luckilly we have another car to depend on, and Im workin on it this weekend! Take your time and do it correctly, and enjoy it!
