stereo whine
new stereo, new booster/amp, new speakers. got the dreaded 'alternator whine' in the speakers. this is on a '74 w/external regulator. stereo is grounded thru antenna. booster has dedicated ground. can find no capacitor on alt or regulator to deal w/this. all grounds I've checked in car appear good/battery terminals have no corrosion. installed the new windblocker yesterday also and I want to jam! did a search and could find little to help me. anyone got ideas?

Re: stereo whine
Back in the day we would put a filter in the power wire. I think we got them at radio shack. I can't remember whT they were called tho. It did work very well.

What kind of spark plug wires are you using? And what kind of spark plugs?

Re: stereo whine
thanx for responding. been to radio 'crack' already. it seems they just have dopelgangers to man the registers-didn't have a clue what I was talking about. can't remember what it was called either, dennis. I managed to find an 'old' stereo with that little magic box w/the power and ground running thru it. I'm gonna try to splice that into BOTH stereo and amp feeds and grounds and see what becomes of that. I don't know what the plug wires are; plugs are ngk. but it isn't the static that's the problem. it's the infernal whine (changing pitch w/the rpm's) expect the whine from the missus. and there isn't enough cheese in Wisconsin to go w/this whine! off to try a cure. btw, that wind blocker works amazingly well. kudos to the engineer of the brackets.

Re: stereo whine
Make sure you are using Resistor style spark plugs. I use RN9YC Champion in my 80 FI.

Re: stereo whine
well, that magic little box fixed my woes. it had what looked like a very small transformer and ass't resistors, diodes, capacitors, and a lotta little funky junk along w/a fuse in a plastic box about an inch and a half cube. power and ground wire in and out. I just rigged a ground from the outer sheath of the antenna and buttspliced accordingly. oh, and my plugs are ngk resistors, so I'm alright there. 'preciate all the input-I'm out in the wind (somewhat blocked) jammin'! ron.

Stereo whine?
Partial to Paso Robles reds, myself.
I appreciate the post and follow ups, though. Radio install is the last major piece on the 72, and you've done a nice job describing and resolving the problem!
Thanks
Neil
