Hose blew

Post by fiat218 »

Some thing let loose inside the car, water sprayed all over,I was tinkering around and the car was running
It has a switch to turn on the fans to cool the water, I did not turn it on so. I'm sure it got hot and blew something
I have not check on what happen yet, I'm sure it is simple to see because I don't have the center console in it so I can see pretty easy
I am assuming a hose blew or the heater part

Jim, I had a heater valve blow a few years back. Was squirting antifreeze on the passenger side. Lucky no passenger toes were present at the time.
EZ fix, AR has them.
The pain was cleaning out the antifreeze from the carpet.

Yes, absolutely you can do that without hurting anything.

As mentioned most likely the heater valve - they tend to be the "weak link" in the system. Could also be the heater core too. When the valve on mine gave up and required replacement, I also discovered a leak in the heater core at the valve connection. You can buy new heater cores, but it only cost me around $50 to have mine repaired, cleaned and pressure tested at a radiator shop.

ok ... I have question ... if it is that simple to bypass then does that mean that the heater is in series with the coolant flow???.... and if it is.. then would turning off the heat restrict flow to the back part of the head .... and if that is also true ... is that a flaw in the design or it does not matter that much for where the heater flows back into the engine ???

I have thought about bypassing it in the past ...every time I get into that area I can tell that my hoses are reaching the end of there life and if just bypassing it means no heat but better cooling ..I am in ... plus I could use the space when removing heater core

Matt,
When you turn your heat off, you are essentially doing the same thing as putting a bypass hose in the system.
You are shutting off the heater control valve which stops coolant from flowing through the heater core.
So running around all the time with the heat turned off is no different than having a bypass hose in place.
With the heater valve open, and coolant flowing through the heater core, technically there is a little bit of added cooling to the coolant (because the heater core acts as a small radiator), but it is very minimal -- not enough to prevent one from installing a bypass hose and forgetting about it.

If you bypass the heater core you're gonna need a propane salamander in the truck!!

The summation of the heater core and cooling effects is on point when considering a heater in operation compared to the heater off and/or b ypassed. However, I would point out the benefit of some old school self torture. A few year back when having some cooling issues, turning the heater on with heater fan on full did provide a significant degree of cooling to help keep the car out of the red until i was able to get home. Not a pleasant driving experience as it was over 100 that day with the heater full on.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!
