Gas Tank etc.

I am getting ready to order a new gas tank; fuel sender unit; and fuel pump. I have already purchased rubber gas hose line to replace the old hoses. I live in Ontario Can. so want to ensure I get everthing I need to complete putting the fuel system back together. I will be ordering from AR in Texas. Can anyone tell me if there are any other parts I should consider replacing/ordering to complete this project? Again this is a 73 Spider which has sat in storage for over 20 years.

Get the right clamps for the various transitions from metal to rubber hose, unless you are running rubber all the way, which, in my opinion, is not a great idea. The added safety from having the metal lines instead of rubber inside the cabin is worth it. Just my 2 cents. Lots of people do it the other way with no reported problems.

The rubber hoses are attached by clamps to metal lines which run under the car. I was just going to use the old clamps but will get new ones. Thanks again Russ as I will call Ramzi to discuss the fuel system as he has always been open to talking over the phone. I am worried that the fuel pump they sell doesn't look like the old one and will want to know how to attach it to the origonal mounting bracket. Incidently just booked another 3 weeks is Scottsdale in Feb. /Mar. 2015.

I would also replace the fuel filler hose. 30+ year old ones have been known to fail with no warning.

Here is an update on replacing my fuel tank etc. I vacummed, degreased the entire trunk area with a scrub brush (x2) washed thoroughly then used a 3M Scotch-Bite scuff Pad (fine) then recleaned. It is easy to work in the trunk area with the gas tank out as I am small enough to stand inside. I removed the gas lid cover and took it to an automotive paint supplier for colour match as I had no sticker with the colour code. Interesting they use a special camera to make a slide and run it through a computer program to make the match. They made me a rattle spray can for about $28.00 (Cdn) which did the trunk x2. Make sure to wear an appropriate mask when painting. I used the scuff pad on the new tank and painted it in a well ventilated area.



I purched automotive weather stripping which is perma stick foam, waterproof,low temperature flexibility and stops rattles and vibrations. I would recommend buying 1/2 inch wide( I used 3/4) to make a better fit.

Picked up rubber gas hose from Rubber Line and replaced the old ones. Thanks for the excellent tips on this form for getting this job done especially using a little dish soap to push the new hose through the rubber gromets in the chassis.

Installed the new fuel pump which fit with a little fidlling in the old bracket.

Put the new tank in and wrestled with fuel filler hose. It was late when I got it on and to celebrate my victory had a Jack or 3! Next day went to finish putting the fuel sender unit in and attaching all the hoses. Looked at the filler hose and it was bent/deformed/ crimpted.


I was a bit upset so went to work on the fuel sender and found I could not get it to fit onto the studs. A quick call to my favourite vendor solved the problem and just drilled the holes a little larger and it fit . Put all the hose on and have yet to tighten the clamps and bolt down the tank as I am agonizing over what to do about the fuel filler hose.


I pulled the old hose out of the used parts bin and measured it against the new one. There is a difference of 1 3/4 to 2 inches the new one being the longer and thus the reason it is bent.

Do I take it off ( I will probrably cut it in halve and slice it for easy remove and get a new. Or leave it and risk having the gas flow over if I fill it to fast. The other problem is that it bothers me. Suggestions??

Nice job! Pull that bent hose, there are stress concentrations at those sharp bends that will lead to cracking. Could probably trim a little off each end if it is undamaged and put it back in?

your favorite vendor sells that big hose. It will be flexible and will fit right.

Thanks for the positve compliments. RRoller 123 you are right the hose needs to be replaced. I did buy it from AR. I will call Ramzi tommorrow as today is the Memorial Day to look at options.

JD you look busy! Gas tank looks great. Hope you don't run into the sane problems with fuel filler hose that I did. I am pretty inexperienced so corresponded with my vendor Ramzi. It is good to know he not only knows about spiders but owns one and has done all this work on his car and can give you sound advice. I simply cut off 1 3/4 inches on the new hose and it fits perfect. The second time around putting everything back together went very well. Like me you look like you have lots of stuff on the go. By the way I used long needle nose pliers to put the washer and nut on the back left stud because my hand could not fit it on.
