power windows off track???

Post by wmbrabrand82spider »

My 82 has power windows and the electrical is working to the motors.... Yeah! But the cable seems to be off track. I have taken off the inner panel and see slack in the line. I need to replace the window channel (felt/rubber) also. Can anyone tell me the best way to replace the channel rubber? Does anyone have a diagram of the power window assembly that could help me? Thank you all in advance.

the cable runs around a series of pulleys. You could have a broken pulley but most likely the cable has deteriorated and is bound on the motor leaving slack on the other side. As I recall, that is sold as an assembly with the motor and regulator.

I have recently seen a power window switch that is incorporated into the existing window handle. It gets rid of the rocker switch on the dash. You install the new switch into the door where the old roll up handle would go. Install the old handle onto it and presto. By moving the handle a little up or down, it makes the window work accordingly (no round and round). An electric window with a manual window look. You can also work the passenger side from the drivers handle. Too cool.

Here is a drawing of the rollup mech. I think you can figure out your version from this.

Thank you for the diagram, if I can get my hands in the door I should have it fixed this weekend. I am going to try and replace the window channel rubber as well. Does anyone know if it is a pressure fit in the metal channel or do you use any addesive? Can you replace the rubber while the glass is in the door? Anyone had success with this? Thanks again.

I know it's quite a while but if in case you encounter the same problem, I suggest you get this type of power window switch.
