'77 oil leaking from oil filter area

Post by Rupesy »

I have a fairly constant drip coming from the bottom of the oil filter. I wiped everything down and it looks like the pressure sending unit might be leaking from the seam. It looks like it drips on the top of the oil filter and then runs down the side of the oil filter. Common or possible issue for an old sending unit?

Just wanted to check before buying a sending unit.

you may want to look at the condition of the seat to make sure it isnt all hammered. There is a chance the oil filter has 2 gaskets. not likely but worth checking out with your next oil change.

I just changed the oil and filter to see if it might be filter related. The seat was nice and smooth. Didn't see any thing else unusual but a bead of oil formed at the bottom of the sensor. It still leaks the same after the new filter.

I'll definitely have another look around.

Thanks

I had the same problem & it did turn out to be the sensor. Sensor was actually leaking out the top, wasn't visable unless you took the rubber cap off.

Confirming it was the sensor that was leaking. Also gained another benefit. The new one registers oil pressure instead of just barely coming off zero and the red light going out!!
