shift boot install helper

Post by timspider »

Of my first 100 posts, 98 were of the "please help" variety. I seem to have come upon a tiny detail that might actually be good for folks installing a new shifter boot.
I just did my upper and lower boot and found it to be pretty tough to push my flimsy mounting ring back into place with the new leather boot. Especially at the seems, it was hard to apply enough pressure by hand to get the leather to seat in the groove in the ring.
Using this wooden clamp to expand the ring as I was aligning the holes with my awl made it really easy. The ring practically fell into place and was lined up perfectly for riveting.

Aargh - you're two weeks too late! I must have spent 90 minutes trying to get that darn ring aligned and put in place.

That's a great tip.

I need to replace my boot..To remove the ring, do I just drill out the rivet and put a new rivet in when I replace the ring?

It worked!!!!
I have been fussing on and off with my shifter boot for a couple of weeks now.
Used this method and had it done in 5 minutes.
Awesome!
Thanks.
