Speedo "clicking"

Post by SunnySideUp »

My speedometer is making a noticeable click... click... click sound which seems pretty steady in the 5-35 mph range. After 35 mph I can't hear it for the tire/wind/road noise. I've fiddled with the trip-meter by resetting it several times in hopes it was just a gear not catching properly. No dice - the speedometer keeps going click... click... click when the car is in motion. I have no idea if the cable has ever been replaced. It looks to be original and the speed and mile counters seem relatively accurate with the aftermarket tire/wheel set-up I have. The cable is seated properly in the instrument and also at the transmission. I'm wondering if it is about to bust. Has anyone else experienced such clicking from their speedometer? If so, was it the cable? A worn gear?

Mine was also clicking after I had reinstalled mt speedo. I found where I had kinda bound up the cable. I straitened it out and the clicking stopped. Mine was the cable.

This clicking is usually caused by a lack of lube. Pull the gauge panel, Pull the speedo cable from the speedo housing and lube the speedo cable housing where the cable attaches to the speedo with lithium grease. It should work smoothly and quietly after that.

Thanks, guys. I just happen to have some lithium grease handy! I'll give the lube option a try first. Hope it works as I'd rather do that than swap out the cable.
