Need help identifying muffler

Post by dmwhiteoak »

Can someone identify this . I was led to believe this is a catalytic converter. I installed a header on my car and cut this out. It is not the center muffler as I still have two. Since I have removed it my car now sounds like a rice burner. The inside does not look like any cat I have ever seen.

The factory stock catalytic converters have either a 3-bolt (non FI engines) or 4-bolt flange on both ends. Your pictures remind me of the universal one-size-fits-all cats that could be purchased at an economy muffler shop. What makes me think that you had a catalytic converter is that it appears to have some sort of a heat shield. Were there any spots to attach anti-vibration springs from the cat to the underside of the frame?

Headers make them sound like rice burners. Headers + ANSA twin-tip exhausts and they look and sound like rice burners. The good news is the Header and the ANSA will rust out in 2-3 years and you'll go back to stock and these noises will go away.

On a more serious note that catalyst looks so ancient you may have never heard your engine's true note in the first place; while catalysts typically don't change the exhaust note very much one like that could muffle anything. If it is too bad then look for leaks, unless as noted you have a non-stock rest of the system.

That is the exaust that came with the car when purchased 3 years ago. This header must be better than the 4-1 that was on it. Others with headers that I have heard dont sound this bad . I will change the muffler and see if I like it better. At least now it seems like it can breath.

You likely have something rusted out in the resonator or muffler and it is vibrating, making it sound like a rice burner. Just get the stock components new to the rear and you'll find it has a nice note.

The muffler and resonator appear to be stock. The rear muffler looks as if its new. It had a sweet tone before I removed the cat and added the header. I have no leaks as everything is welded exept for the header to the downpipe. I will start with changing the resonator because it looks at least 35 years old. Brad I have to agree, there is a very sweet tone in there somewhere, now I just have to find it.
