top repair

Post by brackie1 »

The Velcro on the back of my '78's back side windows is shot as well as the Velcro on top where it attaches to the windows. Has anyone tried replacing the Velcro? The top itself is in good shape and I hate to spend the money just because the Velcro is shot. Any suggestions other than springing for a new top?

Go to a marine shop and buy "Marine Goop" - clear - or black if you have a black top. Buy some new velcro of the same approximate width. Take the old velcro and shave it with a razor so it is smooth, then run some sandpaper along it. This creates the bonding surface for the Goop. Put on a thin coat and stick the velcro strips on there. If the velcro has its own adhesive then expose it to the goop.
