Another transmission leak - brake light

Post by TX82FIAT »

Folks, I have a transmission leak at the speado cable and added the internal gasket and tightened it up. Leak went away.

Had a leak at two of the transmission pan bolts, made a new paper gasket adding a little rtv and that leak went away.

Had a leak at the at the drain plug, used a little teflon tape and that leak went away.

The other day I noticed a little more GL1 on the floor in the garage and got under the car to find the backup brake light looks to be weeping oil. also noticed a pan bolt weeping again. Assume a little teflon tape will do the trick for the backup light. I ordered a better oil pan gaskets made from an oil Resitant material from Allisons.

So, this weekend I'll be under the car draining, cleaning and sealing the transmission again. Anyone have any good suggestions or practices they have done that seem to have worked. Is the idea of using three our four wraps arouns the thread of teflon tape a bad idea? Should I use a specific thread sealant desinged for oil and heat applications on the threads?

Thanks for any insght to those that have had these issues.

if my memory serves me well (it usually doesnt), you have a single wire that plugs into the back up switch. If that is the case, then the switch needs to ground thru the treads and teflon taping the treads may keep it from working.

That is the type of info i was looking for. I recall it being a two wire switch so the ground should in theory be outside the switch itself. Should be a simple connection type switch? Any thoughts on not using teflon tape on thread?

the reverse light switch uses two wires, it doesn't need to be grounded. It should seal with a copper washer, not the threads
