Windshield

Do glass companies generally carry windshields for a 1980 FI 2000, or is that something you have to hunt for?

I got a couple quotes in our town and availability wasn't a problem. I went with Safelite and they had it in stock!

I recently had the front windscreen replaced on my 131, they found one eventually and had it shipped down from QLD, the last of a batch of 6 made in 2006. If they hadn't tracked that one down they were talking about getting one from Europe.

Just had Safelite quote it. $250.00

Is that comparable? Seems kinda pricey to me!

That is on the high side. I paid about $150 for mine there. It may be the area you're in. As an example of prices in my area; I had some exhaust work done at a muffler shop here, welding up a couple of joints that had come loose and install a new tail pipe and muffler. He charged me $50. When I said how can you stay in business at those prices he said it's the market here. He has another shop in Arizona and said the prices there are double.

Windshield glass for the Spider is relatively easy to find, as all model years use the same one. The trick is finding someone who knows how to install it. Most shops only have experience with glued-in windshields.

Agree with Balto on experienced personnel. On my replacement, the guy was experienced but the both of us had difficulty getting it to fit in the frame (which we had to loosen on the sides). He had to bring another person the next day to finish the job. I was able to reuse my original gasket as was still in good shape; gasket is not cheap. Windshield and labor was reasonable as I recall.
