Hello from Mike in Colorado. This looks like a great place to be, but I wish I found it sooner. Last year I found an 82 Spider Turbo in Wyoming on Ebay. It looked good in the pictures but I was in Florida at the time and couldn't examine it.
Suffice it to say that it wasn't as advertised. Oh well, I shoulda knew better huh?
After several thousand more dollars invested, I've got it looking and running pretty good, but I'm thinking this forum could have saved me a lot of heartburn.

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum. Better late than never though, right? Have you figured out how to post pictures here yet? We all want to see your '82. I also bought mine off Ebay, but it was within 100 miles from me and the seller agreed to my examination prior to paying, so I got exactly what I thought I was getting. Coming out of Wyoming, sounds like rust shouldn't have been one of the issues you had to deal with. Glad to have you aboard.

Wow, my ID is almost the same as that other Mike. I'll try not to cause too much confusion. Just remember, I'm the one who, like Sgt Schultz, knows nothing! This is my second Spider, but the gap between ownership is 20 odd years, and I forgotten all I used to know about them, except how enjoyable it is to ride around on a sunny summer day with the top down.

OK, so can someone give me a primer on how to post pics? Seems like I need to find someplace on the web to host them and then point to them from here?

How bout some opinions on the latest problem I've got? It seems like I'm leaking a good amount of oil out of the aircleaner housing (which is convienently cracked by the way). I'm fearing that its blowby but havn't had a chance to do a compression/leakdown test. I'm hoping that there might be some known turbo bugaboo where all I have to do is re-route some PCV hose or something for a magic fix? Car runs great, got lots of pull for a 4 banger with 120 horses but this leak has got me scared.

Hey Mike, To post pictures here you do need to upload them first to a photo sharing site first. There are many, Photobucket, Flickr, Imageshack, and others. I'm familiar with Photobucket, so I'll pass along how it works from there. After your photos are uploaded to the site you can copy the URL there, or create clickable thumbnails to copy there and insert in your post back here. You'll see the row of boxes with insert commands above the message composition frame here, if you've copied the URL you would click on URL here and then paste your URL at the cursor. If you copied the image, click on "Img" here, if you copied the clickable thumbnails, you would just copy them here, no need to click on an insert command for these. As for the oil leak, I'm totally clueless about turbo systems. I'm just now getting educated about our FI, so hopefully someone else will have an idea.

ahh, oil leaks, don't we just luv em? OIl coming up the breather can be caused by blow-by or excess pressure in the crankcase. Make sure the breather hose is in good condition and that the flame trap isn't plugged with sludge or something else ( I recently found a PO that has used steel wool as a flame trap, and it was so dense it wouldn't let any air through. That created oil leaks everywhere). There should also be a small vacuum hose from the throttle body to a tee for the breather hose. That tiny bit of vacuum does wonders for preventing positive pressure in the crankcase.

Make sure the oil level isn't over full. I see this alot, where the oil pump pickup is broken the poor mans' solution is to overfill the crankcase. That works okay up to 4000rpms, then the oil is pushed up the breather tube.

After that, do a leakdown test on the engine to determine how much leakage occurs past the rings

I can't. Only a box that says an image should be there. If you're using Photobucket, try clicking the "seclect" box, then go to the bottom of the page and you'll see four blue bands with commands. Click on "generate HTML and IMG code". Click that and then click "IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards". That will copy the code for thumbnails. Go back to the forum and when you are composing a post, paste (Ctrl + V) the code for the thumbnails in your post. No need to click on any commands in the boxes above your composition area. Your post should have thumbnails we can click to see full size.
Fun huh? Took me a while too.
