2 transmissions, opinions wanted?

Post by wizard124 »

The 5 speed I am running has a 4th gear syncro problem. When I bought the car, a spare tranny came with it. The shifter is removed and not useable. The input and output shafts turn in this spare but otherwise I have no idea of its working condition.

My question is this: Repair the installed tranny to include all new syncros and cones and deal with the down time. OR, tear down the spare tranny and inspect for problems (bad bearings, worn gears, etc) and replace the syncros and cones like I am planning to do anyway.

I have a factory repair manual for this job. I am not very familiar with this job. I KNOW what is wrong with the installed tranny. I can spot a bad bearing but may not be able to tell a worn gear from a good one or know that a shifter fork is tweaked. How hard is it to inspect and find bad parts?

Opinions on my best course of action? :?: :?:

Give Lenny a call at Auto Italia, just up the road on the 101. He has a ton of Fiat parts.
Perhaps he has a good tranny or at least a shifter assembly that would work for you.
