I've discussed this in a few threads here, and now that I have the flywheel off and the transmission apart, I can say that the problem I was having was not the ring gear on the flywheel.
You see, a while ago the starter on my 71 started having trouble engaging the ring gear on the flywheel, so it seemed, and so I opted to get a gear reduction starter. Well, a few hours of hell installing that and the problem wasn't fixed. I was able, however, to push the car a few feet in fifth gear and then try starting, and it would start over. This consistently worked and I did it for weeks before I decided I had enough.
So I pulled the transmission and got the flywheel off, and say that the ring gear was really mostly intact -- only perhaps a small bit of wear (1/16th of an inch) on the engaging side. What the hell? Is the metal lip on the gear reduction starter too thick? I got it from autoricambi. Is there something else that could be wrong? Remember, it didn't work with the new starter or the old one. Any ideas, anyone?
Starter Issues
Re: Starter Issues
If the little wheel from the starter could not engage because of the imperfection on the flywheel you would hear a loud grinding sound and it would mess up the teeth on the starter. It does not hurt to take a file and just file or grind every single tooth though. The flywheel should still be good the way it looks
