What does one need???

Son is away at Grad School and planning to move to california when done next summer. His car is a 79 2L stock setup. Auto trans. Other than replacing the catalytic conveter, what else should he be looking at to make sure he passes smog once he gets there (timing tuning all that of course)? Are there any other California specific items other than the CAT?

Just planning ahead...

Smog pump? All stock per the smog placard?

I had mine pass smog, needed Cat and some timing and FI adjustments. I would leave the registration out of state for as long as I could get away with it

I don't recall seeing a smog pump on his car. Ones anyone have a handy diagram and parts list or reference to some?

Perhaps have the son drive to grad school via Ontario and pop in and see Mark. I can't think of anyone down there better versed in the smog issues and Fiat spiders.

the car will need all of the factory systems complete; air injection (either pulse or air pump), egr, catalyst, evaporative, hot air tube to air cleaner. This means all vacuum hoses connected, stock air filter, timing within 3 degrees of stock setting. That will get you by the visual inspection. Then you have to pass a loaded test on a dyno at 15mph and 25mph. The standards get tightened up every 6 months, so it's a bit of a challenge to get these cars passed without some creative tuning.
