So I thought I would take a look at the air filter yesterday to see if it needed replacing. When I pulled off the filter cover I noticed something weird and wasn't sure if it was suppose to be that way or not. The air intake opening that runs from the front of the car was blocked on the inside of the filter cover by a small metal plate. The other intake (the one that draws from near the top of the engine) was wide open and clear. There are two little holes in said plate, but they don't appear to line up with the intake opening. There is also and "E" and and "I" on the top of the filter cover, not sure what that means.
Here are some pictures to help illustrate what I am talking about. Does anyone know if this plate is suppose to be blocking the intake?

Re: Air Filter Cover Question
It's a crude method of controlling air temperature into the engine. In winter the cold air side is blocked, so warm air from around the exhaust is drawn in. Other way around for summer. Depending on how cold your winters are, I always prefer the cold air supply.

Are you saying that I should be blocking the "warm air" side with this panel then? No plans to take my baby out once the snow flies.131 wrote:It's a crude method of controlling air temperature into the engine. Re: Air Filter Cover Question
Yes he is. The opening pointing to the head originally came with an extension leading over to the exhaust manifold. Not sure if your year had it or not, but most that had them were removed long ago. Of course you could just put on a lunch box filter.

Jay,
I = Invero - Winter
E = Estate - Summer
Just keep it oriented to "E" you don't need the hot air. In fact, once the car's up to temp the colder the air the better.
You can run a "lunch box" air filter, lots of guys do. I find them too loud for my taste so I stick with the stock set up.

I now know why one of the three bolts which attach the cover to the filter pan is missing ...
It was removed to avoid any mistake in mounting the cover the wrong way.
Sorry for this post hi-jacking, but I love to learn new details.

Re: Air Filter Cover Question
So I switched the filter cover around to allow cold air into the carb.....WOW. I could definitely tell that she was running much much better on my cruise into work today!
Re: Air Filter Cover Question
This is a crude devise to help control carb icing. Contrary to popular belief, the worst carb icing occurs above freezing, when the air can hold a lot of moisture (humidity). A foggy, 38f degree day is a perfect day for carb icing. It can get bad enough car will start losing power. Tis a rush to whip off an air cleaner and see it looking like the inside of a freezer!

Re: Air Filter Cover Question
Before I converted my car to LPG I had an ADM weber on it. I had to rig up a warm air supply from the exhaust manifold because the carb would freeze up and throttle start sticking when I got off the highway in to town. We rarely get below 0degC in winter where I am.
