I am thinking of putting a K&N air filter system on my 80 FI, and wondered what you folks think of these things. I have drilled the air box full of holes (and it made a noticeable difference in acceleration) and only want to do this if there will be a further improvement.
Also, is there a particular part number that just bolts right on to the AFM, or do I have to fashion up some sort of custom adapter?
Thanks in advance for any advice on this subject!
Pete

Re: K&N Air Filter Question
Hi Pete
You can use an adapter that works on BMWs for the K&N style filter but you'll need to make a bracket to hold the AFM
I did this on my 131 but never noticed an improvement in performance. It did make the engine compartment look
better.

Re: K&N Air Filter Question
the cone style does look more performance oriented, but after the initial installation, I've never seen a K&N that the owner bothered to oil. Every one that comes in is as dry as the Saudi desert. They don't filter very well when dry
Re: K&N Air Filter Question
Mark and I disagree sometimes, but on this Mark is quite correct. I see sooooooo many KN filters that look like they have never, ever, been cleaned, or oiled. Who the heck wants to clean one of those things?? Where, in your sink?? What a mess to deal with. And then nobody remembers where the oil is, or how much.
OK, done venting, carry on.
Keith

Re: K&N Air Filter Question
Hi Pete,
Mark is correct. Most folks that install them forget to clean and oil them. I usually clean them at then end of the season (yes I do it in the kitchen sink). I then let the filter dry and oil them with the K&N spray oil. I give it a quick spritz with the oil in the beginning of the season and I'm ready to go. I have a couple of these available with the K&N kit for sale. $75 plus shipping. It includes the bracket. Looks really sharp in the engine compartment. George
