alternator mounting side (SOLVED)
alternator mounting side (SOLVED)
Hello,
This is to follow up my previous topic
http://fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23954
I have a right side mounted alternator on a homemade mounting bracket that causes a misalignment of the alternator with the crankshaft pulley.
I want to remedy this misalignment, by replacing the bracket.
Which year (if any) had the alternator on the right side of the engine (passenger side) ?
thank you.

Re: alternator mounting side
My 76 has it on the passenger side.
There's two brackets. The lower one (that has that wonderfully long bolt through it, which normally snags against the radiator when you're removing it) that is the pivot point for the alternator - and then there's a top bracket, which provides the adjustable fixing point to give you tension against the alternator belt.
The one circled above looks like the lower one - not sure how that could ever be really out of place. Normally what I've come across is there's a replacement alternator that has slightly different dimensions than the original, which puts the alignment out. I've got a 95A one, which fits snugly in the bottom bracket, but is about 12mm out on the top bracket. Machining a small spacer has done the trick. The entire assembly is about 5mm out on the pulley, but I've kept track of the belt and it hasn't worn at all.
If I had some time I might machine the bottom of the alternator to align nicer - but it doesn't seem to be having an adverse impact.
Just my 2c.

My bracket is not an OEM bracket, but a rough copy made out of iron pieces welded together without a template, so it leads to a misalignment of the atlernator.

Re: alternator mounting side
Yes that is the bottom bracket. I also have Mark Allison's alternator upgrade and had to make a small spacer for the top bracket to align properly. I used a small piece of half inch copper pipe and cut it to the length I needed. Slips on over the bolt with a washer at one end to help crush it back against the upper bracket. I can take a closer picture if you like this evening and post it tomorrow.

Re: alternator mounting side
How far misaligned is the alternator? From memory, my bottom bracket is cast into the bottom of the engine block. I'll check when I'm back in the country - but maybe your "bracket" is an addition that could be removed?westy64 wrote:Thank you Andy, toplessexpat wrote:My 76 has it on the passenger side.

Re: alternator mounting side
Jean,
Check out this link to Jason Miller's site at Miller's Mule http://www.millersmule.com/MillersMuleStore/5-fiat. Look under DOHC Engine subcategory. Jason makes custom parts for our Fiats, and one of them is mounting brackets to mount the alternator on the passenger side of the engine. He has contact information on his site. If you tell him which engine and alternator you have, he probably has both the top and bottom brackets in stock. He also has aluminum pulleys.
Jason makes excellent parts and is very reputable. I have ordered many parts from him as have others on this site.

Re: alternator mounting side
I use Jason's bracket ... very heavy duty... and works a treat.

Re: alternator mounting side
There are also two different alternator pulleys...one Bosch, and one Marelli, if I remember correctly.
Jason Miller is a wonderful resource, in addition to the correct mount, he makes replacement, and even custom pulleys.
My '74 needed a custom main crank pulley when I dropped a 2L in there - the 2L main crank pulley didn't alight properly with the rest of my 1800 style components, so Jason hooked up with a 2l sized, 1800 style pulley - PERFECT!

Re: alternator mounting side
wow,
thank you gentlemen for all these answers.
the misalignment is big enough tomake me fear for the alternator bearing life.
jasons bracket is exactly what I was thinking of, if I were to go to a radical solution.
I have called super John in the meantime, and used original low and upper brackets are on their way to me.
Thank you all for your help, and thank you seabeelt for the use of your picture.

Re: alternator mounting side (SOLVED)
after several trials, it appears that my aftermarket alt is not compatible with original mounting bracket.
so I went back with my existing, with a few spacers here and there to modify the position.
I also put back in place studs as original.
but I learned that if you insert the studs too deeply into the block cast, they interfere with the crankshaft.
hopefully it was on a manual testing.
had to correct all this and everything went fine
thanks again to captain John for his help in this matter.
