Adrians,
Sometimes I forget that there is saltwater in the world, being surrounded by the worlds largest supply of freshwater.

Re: price of gas
Today the average price in the UK is currently 109.2P per litre for unleaded, which I calculate is about US$2.17 or US$8.214 per US gallon. Diesel works out at about US$8.96 per US gallon. It’s just been announced that the staff at one of our refineries are going to strike next week so with the panic buying prices will no doubt inevitably rise.
Alvon’s question about taxes is another matter altogether and is never displayed at the pumps here. The average Brit has no idea whatsoever as to how much the tax really is. OK we know that it’s a double whammy, Fuel Tax is added to the cost and then VAT is added to the total, but it seems that the total percentage is a mystery. After reading this post I thought I’d try and find out and after googling I don’t seem to be getting very far regarding it. A best guess puts it at somewhere between 60% and 70%.

Re: price of gas
Federal tax on a gallon is 18.4¢ and state of Michigan is 54.4¢ a gallon. Thats 72.8¢ per gallon tax out of 3.53
Re: price of gas
Someones already done that. There are a few boat cars running around town. I will try and find a picture of one for you.

Re: price of gas
Years ago, before we were forced to use unleaded racing fuel, we'd use high octane Avgas. It was just a matter of driving to your local regional aerodrome and pulling up to the pumps with a few 20-Litre drums (and if you new the guy on the pump, he'd fill the car tank as well ). It wasn't as cheap as normal road fuel, but it was great for high comp engines and it didn't attract the same tax rate, it was also a hell of a lot cheaper than the jungle juice we use today.
Things are far more regulated today, you need to apply for a passbook now to purchase Avgas

Re: price of gas
They are called Amphicars and I see them on the Great Lakes all the time. Probably because of the fresh water.

Re: price of gas
That's the car! We just had 3 or 4 of those here at an auction. If you don't mind the aligators we have plenty of fresh water here in Florida to drive in
Re: price of gas
Mark.
I think the water is just a little deeper on the passenger side. LOL. I though you'd get a kick out of that one.

Re: price of gas
that boy could be the solution to another post about spring height varying from one side to the other. Just rent bubba to sit on the high side for awhile and mash those springs down
Re: price of gas
Here in Montreal its 1.40 / litre for 91 octane.
The bottom line in truth is we will pay the price for our toys and daily drivers. We are just too dependant on fuel. Hybrids are getting better, but I feel its not time yet. Maybe a good European diesel is the answer? On vacation in Italy I drove a Fiat Ducato (9 passenger van) or a pullman as they call it (bus). 5 speed with a/c running all the time, I did something like a 1000 kilometers on a tank of diesel. This was not highway only driving. This was through the mountains and everything. If I could get one here I would buy it in a flash.
