Bearing chatter? SOLVED

Post by AaronBerk »

Got a noise going on here, and I tried to you tube it.

Looks like my audio is pretty lousy, I'll see what I can do.

The noise sounds allot like bearing chatter.

I've got a new timing belt and pulley on the Fiat, and the water pump looked allot newer than any of the other engine components.

Pulled out the stethoscope and it sounds like the noise is centralized on the front of the exhaust cam box.
After researching it appears there are no cam bearings???

I guess there would be bronze bushings in there or something right?

If the noise started after the timing belt change recheck the position of the aux shaft. I would not run the car untill you are sure it is positioned correctly. If the aux shaft is not timed correctly the crank shaft hits it and it can put a hole in the block.

Thank you for the heads up.
I check and double checked the aux shaft timing during assembly, and then rotated the engine by hand about 8? revolutions to insure everything cleared.
I can say without a doubt, it isn't the aux shaft. (I think I would get a continual knock if it was)

What I'm getting is definitely a fluttering chatter, much like a failing water pump sequel, or wheel bearing seizure kind of noise.

remove the cam cover and see how much oil is in the cam housing, it should be floating in oil just after running. there are no bushings or bearings on the camshaft, its just a plain bearing, cam rides in the housing. i have never seen a housing seize or wear out. i did look at the housings, rotated the cams in the housings everything felt fine. im very interested on what is found. but the audio is so poor i cannot tell anything from that

Lol, yes it's fine to say it. The audio sucked.

I'll crank it up and then do an oil check in the housing.
Before I closed it up during assembly I poured oil on top of each cam lobe.

I will report any findings to this thread and include pictures.

Thanks for all the help.

are you sure the cam sprocket bolts are tight?

Yup audio terrible. Something loose, likely not inside head. Mark is on the right track, time to take apart and start checking bolts...

Inside exhaust cam box, after a cruise through the subdivision. Engine up to temp quickly and maintaining.

Is there a wear in period for this rebuilt head?
The noise was MUCH less subdued and not as frequent on this go around.

You need to find that noise. There is no wear in period on a rebuilt head.

did you replace the tensioner bearing? i have seen some of those that are wider than the original rub on the black metal too. imho remove the metal and throw it away. there will be some that swear by it and others that swear at it. me personally i remove the front piece and leave the 2 back pieces and the small piece that ties the 2 sides together
